The Composer Bernd Alois Zimmermann
The great, enigmatic post-war composer Bernd Alois Zimmermann described himself as "a very Rhenish mixture of monk and Dionysos"; he was, he said, "stubborn" and "constantly sitting between two chairs." Zimmermann had to struggle against considerable resistance. Today, his opera Die Soldaten and the Requiem for a Young Poet are regarded as masterpieces of the 20th century.
Bach, Beethoven and Wagner, Gregorian chant and the Beatles, texts, sounds and collages of noises - the humanist Zimmermann brings together the most diverse worlds. His rigorously composed music develops a powerful pull.
The film is the first portrait of the composer, who departed from life in 1970. It unfolds Zimmermann’s life and central themes through his music. Interview partners include the conductors and composers Michael Gielen and Hans Zender, Gertrud Zender, Georg Kröll, the artistic director Klaus Zehelein, and Bettina Zimmermann, Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s daughter.
