We Play
Chick Corea and Bobby McFerrin
Two musicians – a brilliant duo. When Bobby McFerrin and Chick Corea stood on stage together, extraordinary things happened. “There is no other person I connect with so deeply in music as I do with Chick,” says Bobby McFerrin in this film, shot in Munich and at the Verbier Festival. “We are like two beings cast from the same mould — almost frighteningly so.” Chick Corea agrees: “We play with surprises all the time.”
In jazz and classical music, in rehearsals and in concert, in conversation, this bond becomes tangible: the intensity of their communication, the joy of playing. We Play is how Bobby McFerrin and Chick Corea put it, with characteristic simplicity. The film shows two artists in all their versatility, embodying a successful crossover: Bobby McFerrin as singer and conductor, Chick Corea as pianist and composer — in duo, with the Chick Corea New Trio and the Verbier Youth Orchestra. The programme includes works by Leonard Bernstein, Mozart, Rossini and Chick Corea’s Spain for orchestra. For McFerrin and Corea, there was no divide between classical and popular music: “All music is serious.”
